Clarence and Joclyne Hirtzel settled in Rainier, Oregon in 1904. For many decades the Hirtzel family cultivated peppermint in West Rainier with the use of horses at first and then tractors. The flood of 1948 ruined the West Rainier peppermint fields. Peppermint was replanted, but it failed because the new plants had diseased roots that had spread to other fields. Cucumbers and cabbage then became the main crop for several years after. Oats were grown for one year about 1956. Besides farming the Hirtzels were avid hunters and fishermen.
